How do I become a volunteer?

There are 3 key areas where ALTA welcomes your support as a volunteer.

1. Literacy Coach

We have over 30 active trained and certified Literacy Coaches that volunteer their services for us year to year.

They come from very diverse and professional backgrounds including teachers, tutors and coaches, business leaders, university students, heath practitioners, employees and community workers.

If you are thinking about joining us, we ask you to think about what you could bring to the table. If you are able to do a short 15 minute mini-lesson on a chosen topic you can consider yourself already at an advantage.

A few of our coaches are paid, some contracted part-time in accordance with the hours they are available, but most are volunteers. As a few coaches elect to move on in life we are always looking to broaden our portfolio with exciting new coaches that seek to add flavour and culture to our organisation.

If you wish to make a real difference in people’s lives, particularly those that are at a disadvantage in life, we welcome your interest.

You will be required to send in your CV. We will make time to meet with you over a coffee. The first meet is generally an informal chat that allows you to learn a lot more about us as and how we do things. It also gives us a chance to get to know you.

The next step involves enrolling you onto the next National Certification Adult Literacy & Numeracy Education (NCALNE) programme, and details are provided as below. This is a 12 month part-time study programme that arms you with the certification required to work with Adult Students.

We have a great supportive culture within our organisation, and our Literacy and Workplace Coaches are always in demand.

The NCALNE programme is offered annually by Literacy Aotearoa. It is a part time, Level 5, NZQA approved course and comprises:

  80 hours contact course work
  40 hours supervised practicum

The programme covers:

The historical and contemporary contexts of adult literacy provision in Aotearoa New Zealand
  Adult learning and tutoring
  Literacy coaching strategies
  Planning, assessment and evaluation

Entry criteria

 -  New Zealand citizen or permanent resident
 -  Ability to complete a programme of tertiary study at this level
 - Interest in doing volunteer tutoring
 - Experience working with adults

Course costs

There is no cost to undertake the training on the proviso that you commit to volunteer coaching services to us for 52 hours on completion of all Certificate requirements (in addition to any paid work).
If not, there is a cost of $1,380 (GST inclusive) if you do not wish to commit to volunteer coaching. However it should be noted that as the number of participants is limited in any one intake, preference will be given to those committed to volunteer coaching support to our organisation.

2. Specialised Support

You may have specialised sector skills that you believe will benefit ALTA. We are always broadening our networks and calling on people with skills in I.T, legal, education, business development, administration, social services, cultural and language skills.

The Manager loves coffee and is always keen to meet and chat over how best we can capitalise on the skills you have. The Manager pays of course!

3. Committee Member

We are a financially well established incorporated society with solid credentials. Our presence and name in the local community is a reputable one.

If you have professional, governance, business, cultural and or community sector experience that you could voluntarily bring to the table, we would love to discuss the possibility of your contribution to our organisation.

The committee meet around 6 times per year to plan the direction and goals of the organisation.

Please send in your CV to the attention of the Manager - This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

We can arrange an initial tour of the organisation prior to becoming a voluntary board member.

How can I make a donation to Adult Literacy Inc

Yes, we appreciate any form of financial assistance and donations.

These can be in the form of a one-off donation, a regular donation or as a bequest; please contact us.

We are fortunate to have had many successful companies support us over the years and we encourage you to consider us as an organisation that you would like to support.

Besides, our Manager loves coffee and will love to meet up to discuss how best your company can support us.
